Mike and Andrew
Mike was born in Cleveland, Ohio and grew up in Myrtle Beach, S.C. He went to high school with Shannon Wallace. “We’ve been friends for what seems like forever,” said Mike. “We felt that the Pineville area needed a brewery,” said Mike. “We wanted it to be as sports-focused as it could be. We wanted a place to drink good beer and watch the game.” Mike’s favorite beers are NE IPA and a well-made Kolsh. He loves spending time with his kids and keeping up with Aston Villa, the Cleveland Browns, and Clemson sports. Mike and his wife Leigh also love trying out new breweries.
Andrew is a native of South Burlington, VT. He earned his American Brewers Craft Brewers Apprenticeship Diploma. He was working at a Charlotte brewery when he met Mike Smoak through a beer competition called, “Capture the Crown.” Mike won the competition and joined Andrew at his former brewery to make his beer. Andrew’s hoping that the community will embrace Middle James Brewing. “We want to have a family-friendly place for the community to hang out.”
Shannon and Perry
Shannon grew up in Socastee, South Carolina and went to Wingate University where he earned a business degree. Mike and Perry are hometown friends and, “Like family to me,” said Shannon. Shannon worked in restaurant management for four years. Together, Shannon and Perry decided to form Borderline Food Group, LLC and partnered with Middle James Brewing to provide upscale bar food for Middle James Brewing, as well as catering on or off-site. “I’m a big fan of community involvement, so I look forward to partnership with organizations in the community that will bring people together. The holidays are important to me, so I look forward to having fundraisers or events that will help families during this time of the year,” said Shannon. Shannon’s favorite beer is an IPA. “You can get so creative with the flavors.” He enjoys attending Carolina Panthers and Clemson games, concerts, festivals and traveling.
Perry and Shannon grew up together in Socastee, S.C. and have known each other for nearly 20 years. Perry started working in restaurants at the age of 15. “I immediately started into a professional cooking career after high school and worked at several different restaurant concepts.” He became one of the youngest teppanyaki chefs at a Japanese restaurant and then he moved into fine dining. He worked at a sushi bar for several years before being promoted to executive chef of a multi-concept restaurant at 25. “We hope that Middle James Brewing will help build a culture and create a social hub with great food and drink that caters to everyone in a family friendly environment,” said Perry. Perry’s favorite beer is an amber ale. He loves spending time with his two kids, visiting the beach and hiking.
